Theo Mercier

The multi-disciplinarian Theo Mercier is an artist, a sculptor, a painter, and a photographer. He uses his work to transmit the ironic magic of simple things revealing the aura living inside of them. An element that absolutely must exist within his art is humor. He is also attracted by the extremely rich and dense topics of sex and death. “I like talking about death with a rotten cabbage and a missing tooth and to deal with sex with eggs and dirty socks. I like to inject those notions into objects that have nothing to do with sex or death, using, for instance, an innocent tea pot.” Said Mercier.

Michelle Knowles

Michelle Knowles is a contemporary visual artist based in Brisbane, Australia. A strong interest in global religious traditions, the esoteric, occult and the psychology of religions culminates in a ritualistic arts practice whereby making provides for meaning. Michelle’s work transforms the mundane into the magical through a ritual-like process of spontaneous making. Michelle engages with a broad range of visual media - both digital and physical and her work explores dichotomies such as the strange and the familiar, nature and artifice, and the mundane and the magical. Through a process of transforming banal primary materials into totemic and talismanic objects much of her work speaks of the uncanny and the otherworldly. Video and photography are used as methods of activating these objects, and her most recent works involve the use of these objects in shamanic-like, ritualistic performances.

Large-scale color photographs from 2005 to 2006 reflect the ritual adornment and spirituality of masquerade in Nigeria, Benin and Burkina Faso in West Africa. These portraits of masqueraders build on Galembo's work of the past twenty years photographing the rituals and religious culture in Nigeria, Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica and Haiti, as well as the homegrown custom of Halloween in the United States.
